Paul Giamatti werd geboren op 6 Juni 1967 in New Haven, Connecticut. Hij ging naar de universiteit van Yale en acteerde toen in het theater. Hij haalde z’n bachelors in Engels en beslot naar de Yale School of Drama te gaan waar hij een “Master of Fine Arts” diploma haalde. Hij begon z’n carrière in diverse theaterproducties (ook op Broadway) en begon in de jaren negentig ook met films en Tv series. Hij werd vooral bekend door zijn rollen in American Splendor en Sideways.
