Paul Bettany werd geboren op 27 mei 1971 in London. Nadat hij op zichzelf ging wonen verdiende hij geld met z’n gitaar als straatmuzikant. Hij ging naar het Drama Centre London en speelde toneel. Dat was in verscheidene Shakespeare stukken (met the Royal Shakespeare Company). Hij maakte de stap naar TV en verscheen in diverse series. Z’n eerste hoofdrol was in de film Gangster No.1, waardoor hij bekender werd. Z’n eerste grote Hollywood productie was A Knight’s Tale. Sindsdien verscheen hij in een groot aantal films waaronder A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander en The Da Vinci Code en als de stem van J.A.R.V.I.S. in de Iron Man films.
